Use initiative to manage exposure

Initiative is a positioning resource. Choose when a hero becomes exposed, and plan the next round before stepping into melee.

When is acting early useful?

Early action is valuable when you can remove or disable a dangerous enemy before it acts, move away from a threatened position or secure an objective in time. It does not automatically make a turn safe. Moving toward several enemies early can simply give all of them convenient attacks. Compare the effect you will achieve with the attacks that your final position permits.

When can acting late help?

A later turn can let approaching enemies spend movement without reaching you. You may then move in and attack after their turns. This is a planning technique rather than a guaranteed rule: ranged attacks, unusually large movement and special scenario behavior can defeat the expectation. Check the revealed enemy actions and keep another option. If you end next to a survivor, plan whether the following hand can act early enough to leave or finish the fight.

What are the common failures?

Players sometimes choose a late turn because they remember an enemy was slow last round. Its next action can be different. Others use a late approach but forget that their remaining cards cannot provide a quick following turn. Treat initiative as a sequence across rounds, not a single number. Discuss who needs the first attack and who is waiting for a doorway to clear. Avoid sharing exact hidden information when your chosen ruleset restricts it.
